We hear a lot about how Leaders and Managers can support their team members during times of pressure. However, reflecting on this notion made me think about the importance of Leaders and Managers being able to look after themselves too!
What’s the phrase again?! You should put your own oxygen mask on first before then helping others…. So with that in mind, we wanted to share some ideas on how Leaders and Managers can look after themselves.
🧘♀️ Check in with yourself: When we are under pressure, we can whizz through the days and weeks busying ourselves with what we need to deliver. Frenetic energy being spent flitting from one thing to the next. Quite easily things can get out of control. Recognising this, taking some time to check in with yourself can help you identify how you are feeling and managing the pressure point. Sitting in the quiet at the start of the day to ask yourself ‘how am I being today?’ works well for me.
🏀 Keep going with your useful routines: When we have a lot on, the things that give us energy can go on the back burner. If you are someone who gets energy and mental space for getting out for that morning walk, playing a sport or meditating, don’t stop! This is the time you need it most. Whilst it feels easier said than done, make the commitment to yourself that you will continue, it will help you keep your resilience and energy high!
🤗 Use YOUR network: Remember you are not alone. We all go through times where it is hard to focus on one thing, everything feels like a priority and there are not enough hours in the day. Speaking to a trusted colleague or friend can help get some perspective when things feel a little overwhelming.
💕 Be your own mentor: It is easy to step into criticising ourselves when we are under pressure. Spreading ourselves too thinly can throw up feelings of not doing anything particularly well. What would a mentor be saying to you in this moment? How would they guide and champion you at this time?
